Alice: Ah, something smells fantastic! You’re a whiz in the kitchen Paul.
Paul: Thank you.
Ellie: Yes, my daddy’s a wonderful cooker. He’s the bestest daddy in the whole wide world.
Alice: And you’re the luckiest 5 year old, Ellie.
Paul: Oh, that’s the pager. What is it now? Oh no, serious traffic incident. They want me at the hospital right away.
Alice: Oh, I’ll come too. I’m sure they’ll need some extra nurses.
Paul: That’s so professional of you Alice. But could I ask you to do me a huge favour here instead?
Alice: Sure. What is it?
Paul: Would you mind looking after Ellie?
Alice: Oh Paul, you don’t even need to ask.

Social Justice in Education

In this homework that I did with Javiera Castro we were able to have the following conclusions about social justice in education:

What is Social Justice in Education?

Martina: Social Justice in education is to treat all students equally, support them, understand them and give them the freedom to express their opinions about issues in order to know and respect all points of view. accept that in a classroom there will be diversity in students, that everyone will be different and we must respect them as they are and thus teach them the values and knowledge that they will need in the future.

Javiera: Social Justice in education, is about what we teach to students to change the world. I mean, give them knowledge, values, and tools for facing the world without fear, teach them to be good persons for the future, with respect, love and care for others, also teach them that in the world there´s good things and bad things and that is that they need to change for life in a better place

As a future teacher,  How would you promote social justice in your  classes?

Martina: As a future teacher i would like and i would do everything possible to make it so, that the classroom is a safe space for all my students, that they can have the confidence and security to express their opinions or emotions no matter if they are different from the rest, to have personalized classes with the students who have difficulties and take the time to get to know my students, in some way or another to prepare them with everything they need to go out into the outside world and know how to face problems if they have any, that they leave school prepared for anything, that they feel capable of doing everything they want to do, that they are perseverant, tolerant and respectful of others and so, perhaps, to change the education system a little, based on equality and empathy among all.

Javiera: I think, that when I become a teacher, I will teach concerning for to my students and the world we live in because they will need a good teacher and they can continue with the values that I will give them. Also, I will like to teach them about how is the world outside of the school. That will make that my students can become aware of what they have to deal with. The main values that I will like to teach to my students would be: respect, empathy, patience, tolerance, solidarity, and gratitude; more than just teaching, I will train people for the future, that doesn’t hurt anybody, and don’t think that they are superiors to others for so many reasons. I want them to see all people as equals, as human beings living together in the same place.

Paul: I’m pleased everything’s out in the open now Alice. I didn’t like hiding things from you.
Alice: You should have told me right from the word go, Paul. It was the way I found out that made me so upset.
Paul: I know Alice, and I’m sorry. But things are going to be very different from now on. I’ve got a good feeling about you and me, do you know that?
Alice: I’m glad.
Paul: Oh my goodness, is that the time?
Alice: What’s the matter?
Paul: Oh gosh, Alice, I’ve got to fly, I’m picking Ellie up from school and I’m think I’m going to be late!
Alice: Aren’t you going to finish your coffee?
Paul: There’s no time, I’m late as it is, bye!
Alice: Bye. Paul.
